The origins of Royal Air Force Bomb Disposal began in 1939 following the first German bombs falling on British soil at Sullom Voe.


Over the course of the Second World War, RAF Bomb Disposal teams served in the Middle East, North Africa, Italy, China, The Malay States, Gibraltar, France, Norway, Belgium, 


Holland, Denmark, Austria and Germany and were actively employed with the Allied Disarmament Organisation post-war.


Over the following years RAF Bomb Disposal personnel were involved in Operations and Deployments throughout the world including:


Op Sandcastle, Cyprus, the Falkland Islands, Iraq, the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, Op Rectify, Op Olympic, NATO Baltic Air Policing Missions and Military Aid to the Civil Authorities (MACA) Operations.


The final unit, 5131 (BD) Sqn, was disbanded on 1st April 2020 bringing to an end more than 80 years of Royal Air Force Bomb Disposal service.
